Local problems need local solutions
The human rights at stake in childbirth touch on fundamental, universal aspects of being human. And yet the status of these rights, and their significance for current maternity care, are also specific in each social, political, and cultural context. While women around the world face many similar issues in obstetric care and reproductive justice, universal issues play out in each nation’s healthcare system and legal system differently. Local problems need local solutions. Around the world, people are working for humanized, rights-respecting maternity care in their community. HRiC is interested in following the developments of each community’s efforts to realize the human rights of birthing women. The recognition of legal rights sometimes requires legal advocacy. For this reason, HRiC is helping to build a network of lawyers around the world who work on cases involving HRiC issues. Regional Coordinators are developing networks in their part of the world for referral, collaboration, and strategic advocacy. Are you interested in helping to connect activists and advocates working on HRiC issues in your country? Would you like to find information on this website about birth rights in other countries?
